Beeswax & Peppermint Lip Balm

This soothing, cooling, hydrating, and nourishing lip balm is made from beeswax, cacao butter, coconut oil, peppermint essential oil, and vitamin E.

  • Assemble ingredients and equipment.
  • Use microplane grater to grate beeswax into a wide, glass bowl.
  • Use microplane grater to grate cacao butter.
  • Add grated beeswax, cacao butter, and coconut oil to a butter warmer and melt on low heat.
  • Stir, remove mixture from heat, and allow to cool. Before beeswax begins to harden, add peppermint essential oil and vitamin and stir gently to combine.
  • Immediately pour into glass lip balm containers and allow to cool fully.
  • Lid containers and store in a cool, dry location.

Notes

You can add more or less peppermint essential oil, depending on how strongly you want the peppermint feel and smell to come through.
The only potentially tricky part of this recipe is the heating and cooling process.  The goal is to heat slowly and gently, remove before it gets too hot, then add the essential oil and vitamin E, stir, and pour before the beeswax begins to harden.
The beeswax will begin to harden sooner than you think, but it's also the ingredient that enables the balm to remain on your lips longer with a better seal.  My recommendation is to play around with timing and temperatures until you become comfortable with the process!
