Beeswax & Peppermint Lip Balm

I have a long history of being emotionally involved with my lip balm, from carrying Blistex with me everywhere in middle school to having near panic attacks without my Burt’s Bees tube in college. I’ve had severe eczema since childhood, and the skin above my lips seemed to constantly be breaking out and the delicate lip skin underneath would feel raw and inflamed.

Throughout my journey to heal my eczema, I learned about the toxic and addictive ingredients in conventional skin-care products and decided my best bet was to make my own. This lip balm recipe, together with my Calendula & Rosehip Whipped Tallow Butter and homemade coconut oil soap are the only skin-care products our family of 5 uses. It’s made from whole-food, gentle ingredients to feed my skin and keep it hydrated, nourished, and above-all, comfortable!

  • Lid containers and store in a cool, dry location.

Notes

You can add more or less peppermint essential oil, depending on how strongly you want the peppermint feel and smell to come through.
The only potentially tricky part of this recipe is the heating and cooling process.  The goal is to heat slowly and gently, remove before it gets too hot, then add the essential oil and vitamin E, stir, and pour before the beeswax begins to harden.
The beeswax will begin to harden sooner than you think, but it’s also the ingredient that enables the balm to remain on your lips longer with a better seal.  My recommendation is to play around with timing and temperatures until you become comfortable with the process!

If preferred, you can buy empty, plastic lip balm tubes online. However, I prefer to store my skin care products exclusively in glass, so I use these 5 ml/5 gram glass cosmetic jars. They are reusable, easily cleaned, and the perfect size for lip balm.
